Considered by many to be the best of the passion fruits. Its color varies from dark purple to yellow-orange, with a few small light spots depending on the variety. Its flavor is described as sweet and sour-sweet. Inside its hard, smooth, waxy skin, enclosed in a membranous sac, is a very aromatic and gelatinous pulp composed of about 250 small edible seeds, dark brown or black.
The Granadilla is very similar in appearance to the passion fruit, but they differ in several aspects. The tip of the Granadilla ends in a small stem, not so in the case of passion fruit. The seeds of the granadilla are enveloped in a transparent greenish, jelly-like pulp, while the passion fruit has orange pulp. The shell of the passion fruit is much harder and does not wrinkle when ripe. But the biggest difference is in the taste: although the unmistakable aroma of passion fruit can be recognized in the taste of the granadilla, the latter is much sweeter and its crunchy seeds are edible.
